I've owned my Miata for a couple months now, and I think it's time I took it autocrossing. I know that most events have helmets available, but I think it'd be cool to have my own. I'm looking at Snell SA2010 helmets like this sub-$200 Zamp JA-2.

Is buying an open faced helmet worth the ~$50 savings? I'm concerned that while this will be OK for autocross that it won't work for track days or more serious events.

Edit- Got a full face Solo-Equipped apx helmet in silver. Carbon Fiber tri-weave!

I prefer full face helmets. First, it offers better protection. Second, you can get an m rated helmet and use it for autocross and motorcycles. Third, it feels like more of a race car driver.

nice NA! I recommend just jumping in and getting a full face snell2010 and a nice one at that. I skimped and bought an older m-2005 full face that was incredibly heavy. My times improved dramatically just by getting a lighter helmet.

also shame on you for not autocrossing it immediately after purchasing

Open face helmets don't have chin guards. If you're not going to hit your chin area, you should be fine in my opinion.

Ouch. Didn't think of that.

A few years back I knew a guy who got into a high speed crash in his Datsun 510 and put several of his teeth through his hand on the steering wheel.

I think I'm sold on the full helmet.

I don't know people with quick cars. Everyone I know who's interested in autocrossing is car-less.

Do you think they'd let me register two people on the same car?

yes that is usually possible. actually thats allowed at nationals so I dont see why your local wouldnt allow it.

PRO-TIP!

both of you register with numbers that are easy to change rapidly. I.E. 101 and 110 or 45 and 54 etc...

If a full faced helmet is too hot, look into a motocross helmet. A friend on a pit crew told me they may very look silly but are cooler, than conventional full faced.

I showed up to an event with a motocross helmet once. The organizer couldn't believe it was snell rated; I guess no one had ever used one there.

But if you have the right model, same as they use in pit crews, the organizer can't easily refuse it.

I see your edit, but if you plan on track days full face is the way to go. Always put the visor down because shit flying into your face on track is a real possibility.

Also thats a nice NA is it a 95?

I always feel like one of the bad guys from "Spaceballs" in an open-faced helmet.

Also, a closed-face is like a socially acceptable paper bag. I hate my face . This makes me happy.

Seriously, though, it's all what you're comfortable with. For autocross, open faced is fine unless you end up hitching a ride in someone's prepared-class car where they've hacked off the windshield. Then you'll want a closed-face on hand, but I don't know how many people near you actually build those.

There is a reason the phrase used is "Take it on the chin"

Also, I kissed the chin bar on my Arai when I laid my bake down a few months back. It was just paint damage (no foam compression) but if I didn't have full face, I would have been picking gravel out of there.

Glad you got the full face. Being safer is always better. And I believe events around me require a full face for convertibles

Did you buy it on ebay? The price (140 + 20 shipping) seems to good to be true
